Design Interactive is UC Davis’s human-centered design organization that offers hands-on projects, design workshops, and valuable resources for human-centered design. In the fall quarter of 2021, I joined their fellowship program to be a part of a group project to design a library reservation app for the UC Davis library.

Through this Design Interactive project, I learned the importance of teamwork and active engagement. Without staying on task and scheduling recurring meetings, I realized that it was difficult to track progress and keep everyone on the same page. Our team struggled with splitting up work due to the initial mood of working on everything together. While it is effective in hearing different opinions, assigning different roles would have been an efficient approach. For example, I found out towards the end that one of my team members excelled in designing UI layouts. Feedback for my next team project would be to discuss what team members excel at first and divide tasks based on that information.

DESIGN PROCESS

  1. Empathize: Survey
  2. Define: Goals
  3. Brainstorm: Ideation
  4. Develop: Sketches & Lo-fi Wireframes
  5. Prototype: Hi-fidelity Mockups

Prototype: Hi-fidelity Mockups

1. EMPATHIZE

SURVEY

We surveyed 40 students about their experience finding a seat in the library

3 MAIN TAKEAWAYS

  • Students struggle to find out which area of the library is available
  • Students struggle to find a spot during midterms and finals.
  • Students struggle to find a library spot with a charger

“I can find spots but I wish I knew how crowded it was before showing up. The embarrassment of walking around finding a spot makes me want to jam a fork into my skull” – comment from survey

2. DEFINE

Goals

3. BRAINSTORM

Idea 1

  • Find out which areas of the library are occupied
  • Sign in at your table with a QR code
  • Check the app to see which areas are populated

Idea 2

  • Shows the type of seating through pictures ex – the type of table, chairs

Idea 3

  • Can reserve library seats in advance
  • App-based
  • 50% of library space is open for reservations
  • Can reserve spots based on:
  • Number of people
  • Charger
  • Seat type

4. DEVELOP
